Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In Geneva, during the 48th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), a resolution was adopted on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the human rights of youth, initiated by Uzbekistan.
It should be noted that it received the unanimous approval of all 47 member states of the UN Human Rights Council without exception.
Following the development of the Resolution, it was supported and joined as co-sponsors by 37 states representing all regional groups existing in the UN system.
Based on the text of the draft document prepared by the National Center for Human Rights of Uzbekistan, the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the UN Office in Geneva held 2 rounds of informal consultations, in which over 400 representatives from about 70 countries, as well as staff of the UN Secretariat and others, took part.
During the consultations, more than 300 comments were received on the provisions of the draft document, which were grouped, classified and selected taking into account their compliance with the main idea and content developed by the Uzbek side of the draft document. In particular, special attention was paid to the exclusion of recommendations that could contradict the national legislation of Uzbekistan.
In general, thanks to targeted work, the Uzbek side managed to get the support of most countries from all continents.
In addition, as a result of the negotiations, the delegation of Uzbekistan formed the so-called "core group" of co-authors, covering almost all regional groups in the HRC.
The adoption of the resolution on the basis of consensus is proof of the widespread support of the world community for international initiatives and reform programs carried out in the country under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The idea of developing and adopting a resolution of the UN Human Rights Council on the rights of youth during a pandemic was put forward by the country’s leader at the 46th session of the HRC on 22 February 2021.
The document calls on states to create equal opportunities for young people, to assist in ensuring their rights and freedoms in the context of reducing the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The resolution also mandates a detailed study by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on ways to mitigate the impact of the global pandemic on youth rights, including identifying cases of discrimination against young people in the exercise of their human rights, including young women and girls.
The document is posted on the UN document management system in all 6 official languages.
A report on the implementation of the adopted resolution will be heard at the 51st session of the HRC in September 2022.
