The OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan co-organized with the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights (Ombudsperson), the National Human Rights Centre, and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and INGO Penal Reform International, the International conference "Prospects for the development of the National Preventive Mechanism against torture based on international standards in Uzbekistan".

The event brought together more than seventy participants, both international, regional and national, who discussed the mechanisms of increasing the efficiency of protection of human rights and freedoms in penitentiary facilities, the role of civil society representatives in protecting the rights and freedoms of persons serving punishment.

Mr. Hans-Ullrich Ihm, Acting Head of Mission, OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan, in his opening speech stressed that the OSCE stands ready to provide expert and technical support for Governmental agencies and NGOs in enhancing the legal basis and the activities in National Preventative Mechanism system. The conference was organized within the Project “Support to Establishment of a National Preventive Mechanism against Torture”, funded by the Governments of Italy and Norway.
